This deep red spiny shell and sterling silver ring was handmade by a Navajo artist. A rectangular spiny shell was cut, polished, and set in a smooth bezel and surrounded by a hand-stamped sterling silver frame. It was lightly oxidized to bring out the detail and give it a vintage look. It has a comfortable split shank band. Spiny shell is found deep in the Sea of Cortez off the Baja Peninsula. It is considered an organic gem because, unlike a stone, it was once part of a living thing. The colors of spiny shells vary from shades of red, purple, and orange.
